Neighbourhood Spotlight Kensington Market
January 27 / 2012
Alex J. Wilson performs a neighbourhood spotlight and explores the neighbourhood known as Kensington Market. This area is located south of College, North of Dundas, West of Spadina and East of Bathurst. I would call this area the most Bohemian area in Toronto. It is comprised of single storey shops that sell a wide range of products including vintage clothing stores, discount shops, ethnic cuisine, fresh meat and produce. Do not let the run down nature of the buildings fool you there are some great shopping opportunities in this area. Some of my favourites include 1) Toms Place which has been known as a hangout for Bay Street folk looking for the best deal on designer suites 2) European Meats which is where I get all my meat for my Annual Buffalo Bills Road Trip 3) If you are looking for an alternative place to go on a date and you want to have a great cup of coffee check out Kenningstons – The Coffee Cup. The main streets in this area are Kensington Ave, Augusta Ave, and Bellevue Ave. Since it is located between the College, Spadina, Bathurst and Dundas street cars I recommend taking public transportation to this location as the interior streets are dominated by pedestrians and parking is very limited.
Kensington has been able to fight off development in the past but with the increasing density of the city it seems now they will have to share their space with condo developers. Tribute Communities has recently purchased the Zen Buddhist Temple at 297 College Street for more information on what the project will look like click here.
